Coco Mats: What Coir Is and How to Choose One
Share
A coco mat is a doormat made from coir, the stiff fiber from coconut husks. Coir scrapes mud, sand, salt and leaves off shoes before they reach the floor.
How to choose a coco mat
- Thickness. A 1/2" vinyl-backed mat clears most doors. A 1" or 2" woven-back mat scrapes deeper and sits in front of the door, outside its swing. Measure the gap under the open door first.
- Size. Pick a mat at least as wide as the door: 22 x 36 in or 24 x 36 in for a standard single door, 3 x 5 ft or 3 x 6 ft for double doors and wide entries.
- Placement. Coir holds water, so it lasts longest at a covered entry. For an open step that takes the rain, choose an all-weather mat.
- Exact fits. For a recessed mat well or an odd-sized entry, we cut coir to size. See how to measure.
Shake it out or vacuum it, and stand it on edge to dry if it gets soaked. Browse our coco coir doormats.
